The third Junior Eurovision Song Contest took place at the Ethias Arena of Hasselt, Belgium, on Saturday 26 November 2005. The contest last just over 2 1/4 hours.
Marcel Vanthilt and Maureen Louys hosted this event.
Marcel Vanthilt is a jury member for Belgian national finals for both adult and junior contests since 1999. He was also one of the Flemish commentators at the Junior Eurovision 2004. Maureen Louys co-host Belgian finals for the 2004 and 2005 Junior Eurovision.
A juggling act from circus de sole performed the interview act. Also I assume that Maria Isabel, winner from 2004 also performed during the interview act, but viewers in the UK saw an advert break!
The singers must all be aged between 8 to 15 years old on the day of their national final. They must have written their song themselves with no professional help.
16 Countries took part but 17 countries voted. Cyprus withdrew earlier in the year but they were able to vote in the contest. They are in performance order (drawn on 13 October 2005), Greece, Denmark, Croatia, Romania, United Kingdom, Sweden, Russia, F.Y.R. Macedonia, Netherlands, Serbia & Montenegro, Latvia, Belgium, Malta, Norway, Spain, Belarus.
The winner was decided by televoting, as like the main Eurovision Song Contest. The voting was slightly different that the first 5 points are shown on screen before handing over to the spokesperson. It did speed the process up. A computer crashed when the UK gave their votes!
The 2006 host will not be the winner of the Junior 2005 contest. The host for 2006 Junior Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Romania on Saturday 2 December 2005.
